The Heisler was invented in 1891 by Charles L. Heisler. Heisler's Locomotive made an impact on the logging industry of the United States through the turn of the century and well into 1941. Although it was considered the fastest of the geared steam locomotives, the notoriety of the Heisler came from its pulling capabilities, making it the perfect engine of choice for the Coos Bay Lumber Company.
The Coos Bay Lumber Company was considered the most innovative logging company across the Pacific Northwest. It operated in the mountains in Oregon from 1916 through 1956and directly influenced the growth at Coos Bay, making it a major exporting hub for lumber transported to San Francisco. The Heisler could make up to three trips a day dropping off log cars and pulling the newly loaded cars to take down the mountain to dump the logs into Coos Bay.
